A limerick is a five line humerous verse with a rigid metre and rhyming scheme. Limericks were popularised by Edward Lear in Victorian England.
I was never any good at poetry at school but I find that I can, with a bit of effort, produce a limerick to mark special occasions.

But confirmed all John Major's worst fears.
So now we have young Mister Blair,
Who seems like a breath of fresh air.
Although very keen,
It remains to be seen
How in power he'll actually fare.
